Celebrating the Jubilee is like supporting Britain at the Olympics or Eurovision; liberals misunderstand the nature and functions of British patriotism
Thanks for this from the far shore of across the pond! In the other life i’m never going to live, the one where my gravitas, charisma and perspicacity propel me to political prominence, i will make it required reading. Here in the states the liberal chattering classes are similarly afflicted. I share a lot of their sentiments but, having grown up in a small town in ‘flyover country’, i have a different perspective on patriotic celebration and display. If you ever travel this direction in summer head for Crawford, Nebraska, on the 4th of July for the best Independence Day in the country!
I fully agree with this. Last week my 10 year olds school had a Jubilee event and seeing all of the children from a wide variety of backgrounds enjoying modelling their crowns etc made for wonderful viewing. If the Jubilee celebrations foster a sense of a collective and bring people together then its a positive.
Her Maj, Brenda, whatever we like to call her, certainly has a place in my heart. Even when I was nodding along with the sneering professional/managerial libby leftists of my old tiresome Twitter circles about 'gammons' and the like, there was never any room there for antipathy toward her. The royals in general now seem to me to be a high-value, low-harm institution and Elizabeth herself a remarkable person who's life I would never want to swap mine with. Have a lovely Platinum Jubilee break and sink a few cup cakes for me :)

Yes, exactly the same problem in the US!

It will be a great event :-)

Yes the Queen's popularity, across all sections of society, speaks volumes - have a great Jubilee weekend!
